Exam Prep weeks & RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal or Offshore Exam

Experience required: Competent Crew Practical, RYA Day Skipper Theory, RYA Day Skipper Practical, RYA Yachtmaster Coastal/Offshore Theory, RYA Coastal Skipper Practical, RYA VHF SRC Radio & STCW Elementary First Aid

The Exam Preparation Practical weeks revise all course material and skills for both theory and practical aspects required to successfully take your RYA Yachtmaster Examination.
This 9 day live-aboard Exam Preparation course is followed by the RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Examination.
The course & Examination runs from Monday to normally the following Friday and takes place on one of the yachts in Yachtport, Saldanha Bay.

You need to have quality experience and be a competent and confident skipper, and will need to perform manoeuvres for the examiner such as recovering man over board, coming along side, approaching and leaving a mooring or anchor and handle the yacht under sail in confined waters while giving instructions to your crew.   If you would like to build up skippering, navigation skills & mileage, then please see our RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Skills Development & Mileage weeks.

The syllabus is the same for both RYA Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore Certificates of Competence, but the level of experience, skill and knowledge required for the award of Yachtmaster Offshore is higher than that required for the award of Yachtmaster Coastal.
There are no trick questions, but the syllabus is demanding and you will need to be able to manage the boat and crew confidently and well in a variety of conditions and tasks.

You will receive an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal or RYA Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence issued by the RYA after successful completion of the Exam

You are also able to do a dual RYA / SAS practical exam and thereby gain your SAS qualifications needed for skippering yachts in South African waters.
